When I first moved to Manhattan, KS I did not realize the vastness and the importance of the Flint Hills. When I first moved here, I was also a little confused about all the names people used when referring to the Flint Hills. People would speak about the Konza prairie, the tallgrass prairie, and the Flint Hills. I was unsure if the names were interchangeable, it was all the same thing, or it just depended on who you were talking to and their knowledge of the prairie. In short, I have figured out that the Flint Hills is what the entire range of tallgrass prairie. The Konza prairie is our section around Manhattan, KS. This section was divided into watershed-sized management area that also studies the role of various burning and grazing treatments within the tallgrass prairie ecosystem. Stretching from Kansas into Oklahoma, the Flint Hills are one of the most beautiful and ecologically significant regions in the country. Many people are doing what they can to keep the Flint Hills as close ecologically to how they were, but also restore more acres of the native grassland.
