Obituary
Robert Michael "Mike" Barker 77
Mike passed away Saturday, August 24, 2024, at his home in Blackfoot, Idaho. Mike was born to Edwin "Ted" and Katie Moeller Barker on March 2,1947 in Twin Falls, Idaho. He graduated from Twin Falls High School in 1965 and enlisted in the United States Navy, serving 2 tours of duty in Vietnam.
After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Mike attended CSI. He was a member of the Circle K (Kiwanis) student organization where he served as the regional president. He was awarded the "Most Outstanding Student" at CSI in 1972. He graduated from CSI with an associate's degree and later graduated from the University of Idaho with a degree in Quality Assurance Engineering. He worked at the INL in various roles in quality assurance for 30+ years and retired in 2011. Mike was also a master electrician and belonged to the IBEW for over 30 years.
Mike met the love of his life, Bonnie Jeanne Allee, while attending CSI. Mike and Bonnie were married on March 20, 1973, in Twin Falls, Idaho. They moved to Blackfoot, Idaho in 1980 where they raised their 4 children: Cathy, Anna, Chris, and Phill.
Once retired, Mike and Bonnie spent several years traveling. They took many cruises, road trips, and trips to Mexico. He was an avid San Antonio Spurs fan and was able to attend some courtside games in person during this time. He was intrigued with Frank Lloyd Wright architecture and was able to tour many of these structures across the United States. A highlight of Mike's life was a fishing trip to Alaska that he took with his son-in-law, Quinn, and grandson, Kaden. They caught Salmon, Rockfish, and Halibut from the Pacific Ocean and Mike marveled at the beauty of Alaska. Another memorable trip was when the entire Barker family went to Mazatlan, Mexico for Christmas in 2016. Precious memories were made on this trip and Mike often reflected fondly on these.
In addition to traveling, Mike enjoyed yard work, gardening and building models. He really took joy in the simple things in life, often collecting rocks, leaves, and unique items found in nature. The highlight of his life was spending his time with his wife, kids, and grandkids. He had 2 honorary grandbabies, Rowynn and Roderick, that also brought him great joy. His beloved dog, Jack, was his faithful companion to the end.
Mike was a member of St John's Catholic chapel in Pingree, Idaho, where he attended regularly until his mobility prevented his attendance. He valued the friendships and connections he made while attending St John's.
Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Katie, and his in-laws, US and Marguerite Allee and Jeanne Drennan. He is survived by his wife Bonnie and their 4 children: Cathy (Aaron) Bailey of Blackfoot, Anna (Quinn) Aldous of Asotin, Washington, Chris (Jessica) Barker of Meridian, Idaho, and Phillip (Suzanne) Barker of Blackfoot; 9 grandchildren: Aspyn Bailey, Swayd Bailey, Jace Aldous, Kaden Aldous, McKylee Aldous, Addyson Barker, Odin Barker, Joey Barker, and Josh Barker; his sister Anneta (Barney) Glavin of Twin Falls, Idaho; 2 nephews Josh (Annie) Glavin and Jed (Laura) Glavin; and great nieces and nephews.
Of all his worldly accomplishments, he will be remembered most for his genuine kindness, patience, compassion, generosity, and selflessness. Mike always put the needs of others above himself and found joy in giving to those he loved. His listening ear and sound advice were cherished by his loved ones and called upon often. He had a witty sense of humor and was always up for a good laugh. He had an infectious smile and a sparkle in his eye that lit up the room. He was deeply loved and leaves a hole in our hearts that can never be filled.
The family is under the care of the Hawker Funeral Home. A private graveside service will be held for the family. He will be interred at the Idaho State Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Blackfoot, Idaho.
