Pistons Lose Pair Detroit Pistons coach Dick Vitale was handed a one-game suspension for his courtside outburst at a referee that led to his ejection from a National Basketball Association game Wednesday against Cleveland Cavaliers.

NBA commissioner Lawrence F. O'Brien suspended Vitale without pay in addition to the automatic $225 fine levied against players or team officials ejected during NBA contests. The former University of Detroit coach drew a second technical foul in the Cleveland game, meaning automatic expulsion from the game. Vitale had to be restrained led from the court. John Shumate, the 6-foot9 Pistons forward, will miss an entire basketball season for the third time in his career because of a rare lung disorder.

Shumate said he was aware his National Basketball Association career may be over. Blood clots form on Shumate's lungs. Wilson, 34, was named interim head coach Wednesday after the resignation under pressure of Emory Bellard. Wilson, former all-Southwest Conference quarterback at Texas Tech had been offensive coordinator at Texas since January, 1975.

Umpires Withdraw Charge The 52 umpires in major league baseball have withdrawn unfair labor practices charges against owners, which prompted a one-day strike last August. The umpires' association walked out because the owners wouldn't renegotiate the umpires' contract. They returned to the jobs under a back-to-work order from a federal judge. Peter Hirsch of the National Labor Relations Board, said his agency would have dismissed the complaint because it found the existing contract between the umpires and leagues was valid, and covered the issues. The umpires had sought to compel the leagues to reopen negotations on such issues as expense accounts, salaries, job security and vacations.

Tennis Topics Two World Team Tennis franchises have folded, threatening survival of the league. The Boston Lobsters, 1978 champions of the Eastern Division, and the New York Apples, twotime league champs, both announced suspension of operations because of the failure of the league to sign star players for the 1979 WTT season. The Lobsters' roster included Martina Navratilova and Tony Roche. New York had Billie Jean King and Vitas Gerulaitis. The league, which went with 10 teams last season, plans to continue operations for 1979.

Tracy Austin easily eliminated unseeded Sabina Simmonds of Italy, 6-1, 6-0, to reach the semifinals of the $35,000 Stuttgart Grand Prix tennis tournament. nba roundup (National Basketball Association) EASTERN CONFERENCE Atlantic Division Pct.
